GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly, allowing the acid contents of the stomach back up, or reflux, into the esophagus. Impleo’s bulking agent is designed to restore LES closure, preventing or reducing the flow of gastric acid into the esophagus.

Impleo’s bulking agent is injected during an endoscopic procedure under sedation. The injection occurs in submucosal tissue of LES creating tissue bulging in the area of LES. This endoluminal procedure treats the underlying mechanical cause of GERD, (i.e. lower esophageal dysfunction), by changing the behavior of the gastroesophageal junction.

It does not require any special capital equipment and can be performed in a gastroenterology suite.
